In the Victoria times, in order to attract interest and bring more visitors to a place, merchants would often build monuments that looked old and interesting.
The obelisk you see at the back is one of such constructions. It was built over a 100 years ago by a local Canterburian merchant.

Interesting information, and here I always thought it was purely for decorative purposes. Economic gain was the goal, then, apparently.
