Today we are back in Chilham Castle... or the remains of it.

Walmer Castle

Walmer Castle was built in the reign of Henry VIII as part of his defence strategy against the attacks of European Catholic forces.

In 1708 it became the official residence of the Lord Warden of Cinque Ports.

It was also the place where the Duke of Wellington died (14 September 1852) and, apparently, his spirit is still there.

Anyone who knows Walmer will tell me off and say that I should not be posting pictures of Walmer in a Canterbury blog because it is not part of Canterbury or anywhere near. My excuse is that firstly, there is no Walmer DP so I am not "invading" anyone's territory. Secondly, it is just a few miles from Canterbury and finally, it is such a beautiful place that I could not resist it.

Canterbury Castle

These are the remains of Canterbury Castle.

Although it was built for warfare with very thick stone walls, Canterbury Castle was never put to the test. It was mainly used as a prision.
There is not much information available about Canterbury Castle but we know that between 1555-57 the castle used to hold 52 innocent martyrs who are imprisioned for their religion and later burnt at the stake.

Dover Castle

Kent is not only well know for its beauty but also for its beautiful historical buildings. A few days ago I took you to see Leeds Castle, tonight I bring you Dover Castle.

One of the largest castles sites in the UK it offers you hours and hours of pleasure. Whether you are interested in the Romans, Medieval History or WWII it will give you plenty to see.

This is a picture I took last Sunday when I took a cousin to visit the place. The buildings at the back are barracks used in various wars in the past 200 years.

Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in England. It is very romantic with a moat and beautiful grounds.

In the summer they have a concert which is followed by fireworks. You can also get balloon trips that leave the castle early in the morning or evening. A fantastic trip if you don't mind paying £120 per person.
