Eastbridge Hospital

Eastbridge Hospital (hospital meaning a place of hospitality) was built 800 years ago and it was used as a place where pilgrims would stay when they came to Canterbury.

It is located right in the centre of Canterbury and it has some amazing and very unusual features.

If you are planning to visit watch out because it is closed on Sundays.

Cottage

I'm not sure what I love most about this place. It might be the wonderful old Tudor style house,. Or is it the very narrow road? Maybe it is the fact that it comes off the High Street...

Who knows? It is a wonderful cottage in a delightful little street right in the town centre.

Abbots Place

This is one of the many wonderful buildings in Elham, one of the most picturesque villages of Kent.

Fordwich Town Hall

As you know I often show you pictures of towns and villages near Canterbury.

Today you can see the smallest Town Hall in the smallest town in Britain: Fordwich Town Hall.

This building was built during the reign of Henry VIII and obviously was slightly different from what you see today. It had a tatched roof and its walls were washed with thick lime plaster.

Walmer Castle

Walmer Castle was built in the reign of Henry VIII as part of his defence strategy against the attacks of European Catholic forces.

In 1708 it became the official residence of the Lord Warden of Cinque Ports.

It was also the place where the Duke of Wellington died (14 September 1852) and, apparently, his spirit is still there.

Secret Wartime Tunnels

This is the entrance of the secret tunnels in Dover Castle. It was used on the Second World War. They have guide tours for those keen to explore the tunnels.

Chilham Gift Shop

Chilham is a village not far from Canterbury. If weren't for the cars, you would think that you had travelled to the past. There are a few medieval houses, an old pub, a church and some cottages that put together make one of the most beautiful villages in England.

This is a photo of the gift shop where you can find lots of lovely souvenirs.

The Weavers' House

In the 16th Century when the Huguenots and Wallons started migrating to England escaping from religious prosecution in France and other parts of Europe, a few of them settled in Canterbury. They were skilled weavers and this is the place where where many of them concentrated hence the name The Weaver's House. As they prospered they become important citizens in Canterbury and a couple of them became Councillors.

Today it is a restaurant and quite a good one!
