125th Birthday

This week Marks and Spencer is celebrating their 125th birthday.

St Peter's Church in the Heart of Canterbury

On Sunday I braved the cold weather and went out to take pictures.

As I walked down the St George's St, I noticed St Peter's Church was open so I went in.

It was my first visit there and the lady minding the place told me that it was open because it is that time of the year - Advent - when churches welcome those who for one reason or another come to church.

The interior is very nice but simple. A few items here and there and nothing like Canterbury Cathedral, its big sister up the road. For more information on the history of the ST Peter's Church visit their website

The banner in the picture was given to the church in memory of Dorothy Violet Keeler (1902-1970) who not only was a member of the church but also was the mother of the kind lady showed me around.

Tattoo Parlour

Sometime ago I went to Canterbury and as I stood in St Peter's St. taking photos of everything around me I saw a beautiful lady in the window.

I waited until she turned her back an took a picture of the window (and her neck!)

The Cuban

A few days ago I went to this wonderful restaurant called The Cuban in Canterbury and I took this photo.

The picture is not great but the food is fantastic and I highly recommend it.

Mamma Mia Italian Market

A taste of Italy comes to St Gerges Street, with this typical Italian country market offering a wide range of Italian food and drink.

Cottage

I'm not sure what I love most about this place. It might be the wonderful old Tudor style house,. Or is it the very narrow road? Maybe it is the fact that it comes off the High Street...

Who knows? It is a wonderful cottage in a delightful little street right in the town centre.

St George's Tower

This building was part of St George's Church. The original building had to be demolished as it was complete ruined by incendiary bombs in the 42 and that is the only part that was left. It was rebuilt as part of 1947 Development Plan.

Small naughty boys used to practice their stone throwing techniques in the clock.

The Weavers' House

In the 16th Century when the Huguenots and Wallons started migrating to England escaping from religious prosecution in France and other parts of Europe, a few of them settled in Canterbury. They were skilled weavers and this is the place where where many of them concentrated hence the name The Weaver's House. As they prospered they become important citizens in Canterbury and a couple of them became Councillors.

Today it is a restaurant and quite a good one!

Nails anyone?

This is a display in a Chinese shop on the High Street in Canterbury.

They are very cheap nails and not at all my taste...but hey! The world is full of different people so if you like them, why not?
