Sorry guys...I am so busy looking at other people's blogs that forget to answer my own! These steps are in Leeds Castle and if you do visit you get to go up there. Dorothee, it leads just to the second floor of a large and nice part of the castle. Petrea, it is a rope. I am glad they kept the rope instead installing a rail along the wall like some other castles. The thick rope is much more sympathetic to the medieval building.

When I see a picture of stairs I always wonder where they get to.
Is that a rope across the stairway? Don't you just wish you could climb the stairs and explore?

yes, they are steps. Nice light coming through the windows, too. But where do these"steps" lead?
