Eastbridge Hospital

Eastbridge Hospital (hospital meaning a place of hospitality) was built 800 years ago and it was used as a place where pilgrims would stay when they came to Canterbury.

It is located right in the centre of Canterbury and it has some amazing and very unusual features.

If you are planning to visit watch out because it is closed on Sundays.

I don't usually like to show bad things in my blog but lately, I have heard so much bad stuff about the police in general that i thought I would show a picture of how wonderful they usually are when we need them.

These people have to deal with the unthinkabla, day after day. They protect and look after us when we need them and occasionally when a minority does something bad, the entire police force gets the criticism.

Anyway, this time they were dealing with a pretty nasty accident on the A28 Canterbury to Ashford.

I have to use this opportunity to show you one of my favourite things in a church: a hassock.

Hassocks are cushions that people use to kneel. Used in churches they tend to be hand stitched in all sorts of motifs. To see the ones I showed before click here

It is time for me to show you a picture of Canterbury Cathedral again.

I have shown you the wall on the left before and also not long ago I showed you the picture of inside these cloisters.

This are is often very quiet because not all tourists stick to the inside of Canterbury Cathedral. Underneath those arches there are seats on the wall where you can seat and meditate or just relax.

This is a beautiful place to be.

Remains of Reculver Church

Brick and stone work have always fascinated me and this mixture is as good as it gets.

I found it in Reculver, a small place not far from Herne Bay. They are the remains of Reculver Church.

Some people think that these blue clocks that seem to be present in so many churches and government buildings are monstrosities and do nothing to enhance the architecture of the place.
I happen to like them. I think they add a bit of colour and fun to an otherwise too serious building.

King's Mill in Canterbury

The history of King's Mill of Canterbury is very rich as it was not an ordinary mill.
It was originally called Abbot's Mill but also had other names such as Eastbridge Mill and Kingsbridge Mill.
Now all we have left is this plaque...

Chillenden Mill

This is Chillenden Mill. Built in 1868 to replaced a former post mill. This iste has been a place for mills for over 500 years.
It is a Grade II listed building and is looked after by the Chillenden Mill Group.

This is the church St. Cosmus and St. Damian in the Blean , not far from Canterbury.
Surrounded by fields, it is unusually isolated, nevertheless is warm and welcoming.

Invicta and the White Horse

I have never talked about Invicta and the white horse in this blog so here is a bit more...
Invicta is the motto of Kent and it means "unconquered". It is said that they use this motto because when William I conquered England Kentish men kept their lands and titles in exchange for their allegiance to William. Not a bad deal, eh?

The white horse is an old symbol for the Saxon Kingdom of Kent Kingdom. Kent County Council also uses a white horse in its logo.

Today is an important day in the history of Canterbury. We are celebrating 1493 years of the death of one of the greatest - if not the greatest - kings that ever lived in this land.
Son of King Eormenric, he married Bertha the daughter of one of the King of Franks.
He was also responsible for bringing St Augustine to England therefore responsible for the introduction of Christianity in Kent.
Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of him and have it ready for today to show you so I am off to Canterbury to see if I can find something that will do justice to his greatness.

Westgate Towers

I must apologise to you for failing to show you one of the most important buildings of Canterbury.
The Westgate Towers is part of the wall that once surrounded Canterbury. The gate was built 1380 by Archbishop Sudbury and for many years it was a prison.

Today the towers house a museum worth visiting if you are around.

Cricket is a very important sport for people of Canterbury. This is St Lawrence Ground where the main games in Kent are played.
On a match day the place is buzzing with life and excitement making you wish you had tickets to go in too...

I have recently decided that I am in love with oysters. Don't take me worng, I have always like them but I had not realised that I adore them... adore adore adore.

And the best place to eat oysters around here is Wheelers Oyster Bar. A wonderful little restaurant where they serve the perfect oyster with the perfect service.

St Dunstans Church - Thomas More

I am sure most of you know who St Thomas More was but, in case you are just another ignorant moron, here is a bit more about the guy who wrote Utopia - not only wrote but he invented the word too - and one of the most important Renaissance Humanists in England.

Born in London on 07/02/1478 he became a lawyer (his father was rich) and by the age of 23 he was already a barrister - yes, the lucky bugger was clever too. In fact, he was so clever that by the tender age of 43, he became an advisor of King Henry VIII. His political career didn't stop there though: in 1523 he also became Speaker of the House of Commons, and in 1529 he was promoted to Lord Chancellor.

Unfortunately, he was also a very (I mean very) religious guy - flagelation was just one of the many things included in his daily routine (I did say he was very religious!) and after a series of political bad moves he ended up refusing to sign the Act of Supremacy which made King Henry VIII the new Super Pope.

As you can imagine, that didn't go down well with his boss and in those days, sacking the poor guy was not enough: you had to behead him too. God, don't wish you could still behead a few now? (Fred Goodwin, Madoff, Peter Cummings, to name a few).

Anyway, how does this guy end up in St Dunstan's Church in Canterbury?

Well, his daughter Margaret was married to the rich local Roper family and they managed to rescue her dad's head which after a week on a spike in London Bridge was ready to be thrown in the Thames. She brought it back with her and buried it in her Roper Vault where it aparantly still is. Don't worry, if you visit, you don't have to see it.

More was canonised in 1935 and is highly revered by the Catholic Church.

St Dunstan Church - Canterbury

Today is a special day for me. I have been publishing photos of Canterbury and the neighbouring areas for one year.

I thought I would take you to a special place. Somewhere I have not taken you before. So I have brought you to St Dunstan's Church, an extremely important place in the history of Canterbury and Britain.

It was here in July, 1174, that King Henry II, came to pay his penance for the death of the Archbishop of Canterbury, St Thomas Becket. He arrived at St. Dunstan's, changed into sackcloth and ashes and walked barefeet to Becket's grave in Canterbury Cathedral where he prayed for forgiviness.
